Caplan Thruster Recipe
From a YouTube video Watch the original
Ingredients
- Dyson Sphere
- Large electromagnetic fields
- Particle accelerators
- Hydrogen and helium from the solar wind
- Radioactive oxygen
- Thermonuclear fusion reactors
Instructions
- Build a Dyson Sphere to gather sunlight and refocus it to the surface of the Sun.
- Use the Dyson Sphere to heat small regions of the Sun to extreme temperatures, lifting billions of tons of mass off the Sun.
- Collect and separate the lifted mass into hydrogen and helium.
- Burn the helium explosively in thermonuclear fusion reactors.
- Expel a jet of radioactive oxygen at a temperature of nearly a billion degrees to become the primary source of propulsion from the stellar engine.
- Use large electromagnetic fields to funnel hydrogen and helium from the solar wind into the engine.
- Accelerate the collected hydrogen with particle accelerators and shoot a jet back at the Sun to balance the thruster and transfer the thrust of the engine back to the Sun.
- Use the Caplan thruster to move the Sun by 50 light years in as little as a million years, or completely redirect the solar system's galactic orbit in 10 million years.
- Colonize hundreds or thousands of stars as the solar system passes by them, or even escape the Milky Way entirely.
- Enjoy the extended life of the Sun and the possibility of becoming an interstellar species for millions of years to come.
