Red Lentil Curry (Musur Dal)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup red lentils
  • 3 cups hot water
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Ginger
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • 1 large onion
  • Red chili powder (optional)
  • Ground coriander (dhania) powder
  • Oil
  • Cumin seeds (jeera)
  • Tomatoes
  • Coriander leaves
  • Green chili
  • Ghee
  • 1 dry red chili
  • Red chili powder

Instructions

  1. Wash red lentils until water runs clear. In a pressure cooker, add red lentils, hot water, turmeric powder, and salt. Pressure cook for 10 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, make a spice paste with red chili powder, turmeric powder, and ground coriander by adding water and mixing.
  3. In a pan, heat oil and add cumin seeds. Add chopped onions, ginger, garlic, and the spice paste. Stir and add chopped tomatoes, coriander stems, and green chili.
  4. Add the cooked lentils to the pan, adjust consistency with hot water, and simmer for 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning.
  5. In a separate pan, heat ghee and add dry red chili, sliced garlic. Once garlic browns, remove from heat, add a pinch of red chili powder, and pour over the dal.
  6. Serve the dal garnished with coriander leaves.
